Blog Post 1
What I notice from reading the first couple pages of the novel is that there are many people within the Garcia family. It seems like they are very connected to each other and enjoy each other's presence. It also seems like they are very used to a set manner in which to live. It is like a routine that they follow everyday. After reading the back of the novel it seems like this is going to all disappear. The lifestyle that they were used to in the Dominican Republic is going to be drastically altered when they have to go to New York. I think that the Garcia girls are going to try to forget their culture and assimilate into the new Ameican culture, but it just will not work. As hard as they try to "Americanize" themselves they will always have a Spanish cultural element in their life. By observing the cover of this novel, I can see that girl is wearing a short skirt. This could symbolize the change of lifestyle that the girls are going to encounter when they come to America. They will start to wear American clothes and start "acting" like Americans. After observing the family tree, I can see that the Garcia girls have a rather large family. This can relate to the story because when they come to American, they might not be as close to their family as they were in the Dominican Republic. This is a big change in the girls' lives and it is probably going to affect them greatly. I feel like as if they will miss there family but they will cover that up and not let it show because they are trying to do everything they can to be American and if that means to forget what they left in the Dominican Republic, then that is what they are going to have to do.
